Groton, Massachusetts was home to the Nipmuc and Nashaway Indians because of the rich sources of fish and transportation along the rivers. The Nashaway Indians called the area Petapawag, meaning swampy land. Today, Groton is the largest town in the Middlesex County in terms of area. The Nashua River and Squannacook River provides fertile land for farmers in the area. It is also home to two famous boarding school in Massachusetts, Groton School and Lawrence Academy.
